Alexander Nikolayevich Kurlovich (Russian Александр Николаевич Курлович; born July 27, 1961 in Hrodna ) is a former Soviet / Belarusian weightlifter super heavyweight and two-time Olympic champion.

Sporting career

Kurlowitschs first international competition was in 1983, when he at the European and World championships in Moscow, which were organized as an event, with 450 kg ( 205 kg in the snatch / 245 kg in put) each second behind Anatoly Pysarenko and before Antonio Krastev occupied. Only the higher body weight placed him behind his compatriot Pysarenko.

In 1984 he was arrested along with Pysarenko at Mirabel Airport in Montreal, as customs officers searched her luggage and anabolic steroids found. The two were sentenced to pay a fine by the Canadian authorities and banned by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF ) for life. Kurlovich, however, was rehabilitated in 1987 and came back to the Soviet national team.

In the same year he won the World Championship in Ostrava with a new world record of 472.5 kg duel ( 212.5 kg / 260 kg ) before Leonid Taranenko with 467.5 kg. In his most recent penetration test he failed at the world record weight of 266.0 kg, which he indeed brought to high route, but could not last long enough to provide a signal of the judges to get to drain. This overhead instability costs him throughout his career some important impact tests.

When, in the course of the doping scandal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, the Bulgarians their Superschwergewichtler Krastev could no longer be run, confirmed Kurlovich his favorite role and convincingly won with 462.5 kg ( 212.5 kg / 250.0 kg ) before Manfred Nerlinger 430, 0 kg, and Martin Zawieja with 415.0 kg of gold.

His winning streak he began in 1989 continued at the European and World Championships in Athens and won another gold medals with 460.0 kg ( 215.0 kg / 245.0 kg ). Again, both events were held in a competition. As 1987 Kurlovich tried in his last attempt to shock a world record weight. This time the load of 262.5 kg in addition to the 215.0 kg in the snatch would have meant a new world record of 477.5 kg, but again his overhead weakness made in securing the load considerably, and he got the test invalid. This would have officially made him the strongest lifters of all time, the currently still Taranenko with 475.0 kg carries (as of November 2009).

At the European Championships 1990 in Aalborg he rose again back to 467.5 kg and was able to place first before Nerlinger with 455.0 kg and 452.5 kg Taranenko with.

Also at the World Cup in 1991 in Donaueschingen, he could confidently assert with 455.0 kg and 425.0 kg with Nerlinger referred back to second place.

Again Kurlovich came to the Games in Barcelona as favorites to now, however, for the United team -starting. With 450.0 kg in a duel him the runners Taranenko and Nerlinger had nothing to oppose.

His last World Cup denied Kurlovich 1994 in Istanbul for Belarus. Here he finished with 457.5 kg the last time the top spot before the new Russian Superschwergewichtler Tschemerkin with 452.5 kg and Stefan Botev with 435.0 kg.

1995 Kurlovich was again found guilty of doping, when he tested positive in a league battle with the SSV Samswegen in Berlin. After the Belarusian Association had campaigned for him, the IMF pardoned him again, by pointing out that national controls for the World Association were irrelevant. Kurlovich himself explained his positive test with the fact that the German Association wanted to create him for the Olympics out of the way in order to give his two super heavyweights Manfred Nerlinger and Ronny Weller better opportunities.

In 1996 he then joined again in Atlanta at the Olympics and finished with a weak for him duel result of 425.0 kg to 5th place.
