The Alfa 145 was based on the chassis of the Fiat Tipo. This has been extensively modified to enable the use of the longitudinally mounted boxer engine of Alfa Romeo. This made the Alfa 145, the modifications with which learned the Fiat Tipo during his modeling career.

First there was the Alfa 145 with the already known from the Alfasud and Alfa 33 8 -valve boxer engines with 1.4 (66 kW/90 hp) and 1.6 liters (76 kW/103 hp) and 1.7 liters and 16-valve (95 kW/129 hp). Furthermore, a turbo diesel with 2.0 liters and 55 kW/90 hp was offered.

Externally, the first generation are visible through an oval tailpipes of the exhaust system, almost flat wheel covers with embossed Alfa Romeo logo, and wipers until reaching the wiper blades plastic panels. The interior is dominated by a gray dashboard with rectangular air vents the image.

1995 Alfa Romeo 145 Quadrifoglio Verde at the 56th IAA was presented as a top model in the 145 CI range. Differences with the other models in the series were the side skirts with green Quadrifoglio emblem, the alloy wheels, sport seats, revised instruments, leather steering wheel with red stitching and a specially tauter sport suspension. When the first engine Twinspark engine work done in this model his service under the hood: a two-liter inline four- cylinder with dual ignition and 110 kW/150 hp.

Facelift

With the revision of the end of 1996, the engine range was changed from the boxer four-cylinder engines with dual ignition, since the boxer engines did not achieve the desired performance and consumption figures due to the markedly higher vehicle weight. Available were four petrol engines from 1.4 to 2.0 liters and 16 valves and continue the turbo diesel.

External modifications to the body are not made. So the difference between the vehicles can be discerned using only a few details: The vehicles were equipped with a third brake light, the wheel covers are now somewhat curved and still have an embossed Alfa Romeo logo, the tailpipe of the exhaust system is now around and windscreen wipers exist as is usual with other vehicles from metal arms with hooked segmented wiper blades. Furthermore, the engine designation is no longer on the left side of the trunk lid behind the message " 145 " attached, but on the right side together with the lettering T.SPARK or TD.

Inside the vehicle was, however, changed more: Now a two-tone center console provide with modified controllers for ventilation and round air vents for a sportier look, the steering wheel is equipped with an attached colored Alfa Romeo logo. Furthermore, a extending from left to right fabric tape, suitable, integrated to the chosen color of the interior on the dashboard, which further enhances the interior. The entire dashboard was better filled with foam to reduce the squeaking and rattling noises on.

Under the body of the Alfa 145 was modified considerably in parallel with the Fiat Tipo, to improve crashworthiness. The Fiat Tipo had scored a devastating result in the then newly launched NCAP crash test, so the front section of the underbody has been significantly strengthened in order to achieve a better crash performance. All vehicles based on the Fiat received these changes also, as well as the Alfa 145 This is the curb weight of the vehicles increased significantly.

In addition, the safety equipment has been further improved: side airbags were now series, the front passenger airbag has a seat occupancy detection.

The engine range was revised only in part: Due to an intake manifold of the 1.8 - liter four-cylinder 106 kW/144 hp and strengthened on the two-liter four-cylinder 114 kW/155 hp, the 2.0-liter turbo diesel was vortex chamber by an 8 valve common-rail direct-injection engine with 77 kW/105 hp replaced with 1.9 liters.
