Alphonso of Brienne

Alfonso was the son of John of Brienne, king of Jerusalem, and the Princess Berenguela of León ( † 1237 ), a daughter of King Alfonso IX. of Castile and Leon. His half sister was the Queen Isabella II of Jerusalem.

It was from his father in 1244 to the court of King Louis IX. ( Saint Louis) sent to France. In 1248 he accompanied the King on the sixth crusade to Egypt. In the Holy Land he then fought in 1253 at Caesarea Philippi ( Banyas ). 1260 Alfons was entrusted with the office of the Grand Chamberlain of France. In Spain in 1265, he supported a cousin, King Alfonso X of Castile, in the fight against the Moors and was praised for it by Pope Clement IV ..

In 1270, Alfonso also took on the seventh crusade to Tunis, where he died on the cross to be in camp dysentery, the same day as the king. His body was transferred also to France and buried in the Abbey of Saint- Denis.
