Andrew Lawrence-King

Andrew Lawrence -King ( born September 3, 1959 at the Island of Guernsey ) is an English solo harpist, continuo player and conductor.

Life

His music career began in Lawrence-King as Hauptchorist at the cathedral and parish church of St Peter Port on the island of Guernsey. At 17, he earned the " Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music" Diploma and won an organ scholarship to Selwyn College, Cambridge. After graduating in mathematics, he completed his music studies at the London Early Music Centre. He studied voice and continuo, among others, Emma Kirkby, Sir Roger Norrington and Nigel Rogers. After graduating he began an international career as a countertenor and continuo player. He is considered one of the leading artists of early music.

To his love for the harp he came by chance: He was invited to the harp maker Tim Hobrough to a celebration, and that night he bought his first harp - a small medieval Irish harp with a dozen strings. Because there was no school where he could learn baroque harp, he brought to the game itself through studies of the sources of the old techniques in. Today, he owns a large collection of Harp, rebuilt after originals from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

In London, he quickly developed into a versatile continuo player (on harp, piano, psaltery, drums, guitar ). He played with almost all the leading ensembles and has over 100 recordings made ​​- from troubadour songs about music for early harp to harp concert by George Frideric Handel.

In 1988 he founded the continuo ensemble Tragicomedi, which he has mitgeleitet six years with his acclaimed revivals of earlier operas. In 1994 he formed his own ensemble The Harp Consort. This consists of singers and instrumentalists - soloists in various formations according to the presented each repertoire. Lawrence-King also works internationally as a guest conductor in performances of early music (especially with the ensemble L' Homme armée from Florence), as a solo harpist and companion (eg for Paul Hillier ).

He received for his recordings Gramophone Award and the Edison Award, and for his musicological services the Noah Greenberg Prize and the Prize of the American Handel Society. In 1992 he was awarded the Erwin Bodky Award for Early Music.

Andrew Lawrence-King has the Yachtmaster Certificate and spends most of his free time on board his yacht continuo. He lives in St Peter Port in Guernsey.
