Arçon

Arçon is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Arçon is located at 845 m, about 5 km north of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on a sun-exposed slopes above the Doubs, at the upper entrance to the Val du Saugeais, northeast of the vast plateau of Arlier ( Pontarlier - Frasnian ), near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​21:34 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The southern part of the area is occupied by open Doubs Valley. The river here flows to the northeast and enters the Val du Saugeais. On its southern side of the Doubs is flanked by the Jura Mountain of the Bois Nangein, on the with 1086 m the highest peak of Arçon is achieved. The church of Notre -Dame de l' Assomption was built in 1830-1844 on the site of a chapel from the 15th century.

Population

With 771 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Arçon one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 669 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the mid-1960s again.
