Art Tripp

Arthur "Art " Dyer Tripp ( also known under the stage name Ed Marimba and Ted Cactus ) ( born September 10, 1944 in Athens ( Ohio)) is a former American professional drummer in particular for his work with Frank Zappa, as well as with Captain Beefheart is known.

Life and work

Tripp grew up in Pittsburgh and began at school playing the drums. During his high school years he played in a local dance band and received percussion lessons with Leonard Stanley from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. From 1961 he attended the College Conservatory of Music Cincinnati, where he worked with John Cage, when he was artist in residence there. During his undergraduate studies in Cincinnati, he was a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, with whom he was in 1966 on a world tour. In 1967 he moved for his master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he came into contact with Frank Zappa and this was playing. Tripp was then a member of the Mothers of Invention, with whom he recorded seven albums and went on several tours throughout Europe and the United States. After the dissolution of the band he played with Tim Buckley in September 1969 ( Live at the Troubadour 1969) and participated in the recordings of King Kong: Jean -Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa in part, only to Change in Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, in which he worked until 1975. With its Beefheart colleagues Bill Harkleroad and Mark Boston, he was involved in the founding of Mallard.

After an interruption in 1975-1978 he worked briefly as a studio musician in Hollywood, before he was trained from 1978 to the chiropractor and Eureka (California ) and practiced since 2000 in Gulfport ( Mississippi).
