Arthur Stanley, 5th Baron Sheffield

Sir Arthur Lyulph Stanley, 5th Baron Sheffield ( born September 14, 1875 in London, United Kingdom; † August 22, 1931 ibid ) was from 1914 to 1920 governor of the Australian state of Victoria.

Life

As a scion of one of the most famous families in England he attended Eton College and Balliol College. In 1902, he completed his law studies with the master, and then worked as a barrister. In 1905 he married Margaret Evelyn Gordon Evans. From 1906 to 1910 he was MP for the Liberal Party in the House of Commons.

In November 1913 Stanley was offered the post of Governor of Victoria. He accepted and came in February 1914 in Melbourne. During his tenure, he enlisted in the population for the purchase of war bonds and war service. 1917, however, he offered his resignation, as he held the office for little tasks ready; also focused on the Australian Minister towards him rather critically and forbade any interference. However, the Colonial Office refused his request and so he remained until January 30, 1920 in office.

After his tenure in 1923, he returned briefly to Australia and became director of the National Bank of Australasia and of the Australian Mercantile Land & Finance Co. In the same year he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons. He died on August 22, 1931 after an operation to a bacterial infection.
