Atlasov Island

The Atlasov Island (Russian остров Атласова / ostrow Atlassowa, also Atlasowinsel, ostrov Atlasova, Atlasov Iceland, Uyakhuzhach, Araito, Alaid or jap阿 頼 度 岛, Araido -tō ) is the northernmost island of the Kuril Islands and part of the Sakhalin Oblast in Russia.

The now uninhabited island is the volcano Alaid, the 2339 m rising above the Sea of ​​Okhotsk. The area of ​​the island is 119 km ².

The island was to Vladimir Atlasov, a Russian explorer of the 17th century, named.

In the Stalin era was until 1953 a prison camp on the island, where up to 600 women were interned. A fish processing plant was abandoned after the end of the Soviet Union. Since then, the island is uninhabited.

On the Kuril settled the Ainu, where stated, the Japanese name of the island. The volcano was called Oyakoba (亲子 场 山). The Treaty of Saint Petersburg, the Kuril Islands were ceded to Japan in 1875, however, occupied during the Second World War on Russia.
