August Koern

August Koern (* April 27, 1900 on the farm in the village Liigu Uue- Võidu, today Karula, rural community Saarepeedi, Viljandi County, Estonia, † January 11, 1989 in Copenhagen / Denmark) was an Estonian diplomat. He was from March 1, 1964 to June 3, 1982 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Estonian government in exile.

Diplomacy

August Koern took part as a volunteer after school at the Estonian War of Independence against Soviet Russia. He then studied philosophy from 1920 to 1923 and from 1923 to 1927 jurisprudence. From 1929 he worked for the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among others, at the Estonian Embassy in Berlin, and later in Warsaw and from 1939 as Chargé d'Affaires in Copenhagen. After the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union Koern remained in exile still politically active for Estonia.
