Avcılar is the capital of the district of the Turkish province of İstanbul as well as a district on the European side of İstanbul. According to the last census Avcılar had 333 944 inhabitants (as of December 2008).

Boroughs

The county Avcılar was separated ( resolution 3806 the Council of Ministers ) from Küçükçekmece district on 27 May 1992 and was thus a separate district. It was founded by merging the following Mahalles:

Economy and infrastructure

The headquarters of the third largest industrial and financial group in Turkey, the Zorlu Holding, located in Avcılar. The company's headquarters was moved in 1970 from Denizli to Avcılar and is located in a skyscraper. The Zorlu Holding controls 50 companies, many of which are national leaders in their respective fields. The group has 30,000 employees and operates in 110 countries.

The Ambarli Limanı is the most important and largest seaport in Turkey and is located in Avcılar. In the harbor about 38 percent of Turkey's imports and exports as well as 63 percent of the Marmara Region are handled. The port employs about 9,300 staff in 7 terminals and in 2007 had an export volume of 24 billion U.S. dollars. The Ambarli Limanı important export products that were produced in Turkey, such as raw materials such as vegetables, fruits, or tobacco. In addition, the port is a focal point for the supply of Istanbul and the Marmara region with oil.

Population Development

After the Balkan War of 1912, the product marketed by the Balkan Muslim and Turkish populations, the so-called Balkan Turks of Bulgaria's Razgrad places, Wetowo and Pazardzhik were settled in Avcılar. In the 1960s, many people from Thrace and Anatolia came to Avcılar. Until the second half of the 20th century Avcılar was still a small agricultural village, which lay on the coast of the Sea of ​​Marmara. The district has grown enormously since the 1980s. The migration came from all parts of the country, of whom more than half of the provinces of Sivas, Tokat and Kars.
