The Batman Bridge is the oldest suspension bridge in Australia, which the Batman Highway ( A73 ) over the River Tamar leads to the north of the state of Tasmania. The highway is the connection between the West Tamar Highway (A7 ) and the East Tamar Highway ( A8). It is named after John Batman (1801-1839), businessman from Launceston and co-founder of Melbourne, named.
The two-lane bridge begins in the east at Whirlpool Reach in the Georgetown Municipality and ends in the west half way between the towns of Kayena and Deviot, both in the West Tamar Municipality. Below the building is the club house of the sailing club of Deviot.
Design Features
Planned by G Maunsell & Partners and built 1966-1968 Batman Bridge was the first major cable-stayed bridge with an inclined pylon. The bridge consists of a steel truss that is suspended on a pylon and is additionally supported by four pillars of pendulum on the east side. The longest span is 206 m, the two abutments are 432 meters apart.
For the superstructure is a steel truss with an orthotropic plate was chosen which is very much lighter than a concrete beam, but a lot more welding work made necessary on site.
The 91 meter high A-frame pylon is made of steel and measures 10.3 m in width. It was built on the western banks of the Tamar River on a diabase rock base and contributes 78% of the bridge weight. The pylon is hinged on the foundation and inclined at 20 ° to the river. Its top three stay cables are stretched to the sides of the road carrier, due to the inclination of the pylon has a shorter length and a better angle to the bridge deck than in a vertical pylon. The pylon is the back of anchors, each with a rope next to the roadway in the soil.
The eastern shore of the Tamar River is made of soft clay that would not have suited as foundation for another pylon, so here pendulum pillars were used. The pile foundation of the piers had to be driven up to 18 m into the soft clay.
