Belém, Portuguese for Bethlehem, is the name of a neighborhood located on the Tagus ( freguesia ) in the west of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. In the 3.45 km ² large municipality located 8546 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

The place was self-employed until 1885, after which it was incorporated into Lisbon. Since, Belém was hardly affected the great earthquake of 1755, which has the city of Lisbon largely destroyed, the area has many well-known attractions of the Portuguese capital, especially those from the period before the quake.

On 7 February 1959, the northern part was raised as São Francisco Xavier to a separate township. In the course of municipal reform, the two municipalities were merged again on 29 September 2013.

In Belém There are many sights of Lisbon, including:

  • The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos ( Hieronymite, World Heritage Site) with the Monastery of Santa Maria church and the grave lay the house Avis (including grave of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões )

Located in Belém former Royal Palace Palácio Nacional de Belém is now the official residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic. In Belém was also the port RESTELO, the traditional harbor of the Portuguese capital, of which stung many famous Portuguese explorer in the lake.

Private transport

Belém lies on the transport axis direction Estoril. The road is mainly the Avenida de India, the main thoroughfare towards Estoril and Cascais important. In addition, north of Belém with a port of Autoestrada A5.

Public transportation

Belém has a same breakpoint on the Linha de Cascais, which is operated at ten- minute intervals of suburban trains of the relation Oeiras Lisbon Cais do Sodré. Another breakpoint near the Torre de Belém, Pedrouços, has been shut down. Also of importance is the tram, line 15E ( Praça do Comércio - Algés ) runs through the district, as well as numerous bus routes.

Sports

In Belém is the Restelo Stadium, the home stadium of the football club Belenenses Lisbon, who is currently in the second highest Portuguese league, the Liga de Honra plays.
