Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel

Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel CM (* July 14, 1948 in Tchela Claka, Ethiopia ) is Archbishop of the Ethiopian Catholic Church in Addis Ababa and Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Addis Ababa.

Life

Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel was dedicated on July 4, 1976 Chaplain of the Vincentians. From 1994-1997 he was prefect of the Apostolic Prefecture of Jimma - Bonga. He was appointed on 7 November 1997 as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa and at the same titular bishop of Bita. Cardinal Paul Tzadua, his predecessor as Archbishop of Addis Ababa and the co-consecrators Yohannes Woldegiorgis ( Vicar Apostolic of Meki ) and Woldetensae Ghebreghiorghis OFM Cap ( Apostolic Vicar of Harar ) initiated him on 25 January 1998 Bishop. On July 7, 1999, he became the archbishop's office of the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa and was also Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Addis Ababa.

Councils and Memberships

Since 1998 he has been President of the Council of the Ethiopian Church, and since 1999 President of the Ethiopian Episcopal Conference. Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him in 2009 as the new member of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.
