The train station Berlin- Schönefeld Airport, also train station Flughafen Berlin- Schönefeld, is a railway station for S -Bahn and regional trains in the Brandenburg municipality of Schönefeld near the same airport.

History

Prehistory

The place Schönefeld received on September 27, 1900 his first station, Schönefeld ( Kr Teltow ) at the Neukölln - Mittenwald Railway ( NME ). In mid-May 1938, started construction of the freight outer ring ( GAR ), but this was quickly erected and just poorly due to the Second World War. The GAR cruised into Schonefeld the route of the NME and was in town also has a railway station, which initially served only operational purposes and was also named Schönefeld ( Kr Teltow ). After the Second World War, the passenger was taken to the leading of Schönefeld section of the GAR, in the resort created with Schoenefeld ( Kr Teltow ) center and Schönefeld settlement new stations. Due to the Berlin blockade the route of the NME was interrupted on October 25, 1948 at the city limits. A connecting curve between NME and GAR was established early on January 3, 1949 in Schönefeld, Schoenefeld train station was given the name of NME Schönefeld ( Kr Teltow ) village.

By 1950 the effects of the division of Germany and Berlin made increasingly felt, a powerful avoidance of West Berlin had become necessary. However, the route of the GAR was not usable for this, as it partly led by West Berlin territory. On May 1, 1950, construction began on the Berlin outer ring, which went into operation on July 1, 1951 between Genshagener Heath and Schönefeld. The official inauguration took place on 10 July 1951. Because south of the village Schönefeld already had the new airport in the making, had the path right through the village and the village pond be performed. East of Schönefeld used the trains in the first months nor the route of the GAR, on December 10, 1951 was the outer ring between Schönefeld and the Gruenauer cross in operation.

Opened to the outer ring on July 10, 1951 Schönefeld railway station ( b Bln ) initially served only operational purposes and as a control station of the GDR border system. Also, passengers were allowed to board and alight. Nevertheless, the link to the airport remained unsatisfactory to the City. Already in early 1959 the plan was an electric train between Schönefeld and the Gruenauer Cross with connections to the city center and the expansion of the control station Schönefeld ( b Bln ) to a connection point between air and rail traffic. However, this did not happen at first.

Airport Station

The need for an expansion of the airport station grew after the construction of the Berlin Wall on 13 August 1961. Could not get it there just a link to the airport, but also the connection of the places south of Berlin with the city center, after the way through West Berlin had been interrupted. The plans for the construction of the S -Bahn trains to Schönefeld were now a matter of urgency, the end of September was the start of construction for the new S - Bahn line. Already on 26 February 1962, the route and an additional platform in Schönefeld went for the S -Bahn into operation, Schönefeld was now connected to the Berlin S- Bahn network. Even on the remote tracks was the former control station for public support. In the same year, the station was renamed twice: first in Central Airport Schönefeld (25 March 1962), then in Central Airport Berlin -Schönefeld. In connection with the renaming of the airport, the station was renamed on 1 June 1976 in Berlin -Schoenefeld Airport.

Despite subsequent building the terminal building and a ticket office of the station long remained temporary. The infrastructure fulfilled neither the representative functions as a gateway to the East German capital nor the practical functions that were necessary for one of the main bus stations of the GDR. Much like the airport itself there were a number of remodeling plans, however, were not realized for many years. In 1976, the airport has a new terminal building, the "New Passenger handling ", but which has been erected at a considerable distance to the station. Back then discussed projects such as the pivoting of the S -Bahn to the new terminal or building a subway from the station to the terminal building were not tackled.

In the summer of 1978 began with a total reconstruction of the station. New, widened and covered platforms were built and erected a reception building. A new pedestrian tunnel instead of the old bridge was taken along with a new reception building at 29 June 1984 into operation. The new S - platform eventually went on December 14, 1984 in operation. On 25-26. March 1983 was a new switchboard in the station into operation on 28 May of the same year, the electrical equipment was taken to the remote tracks.

Since the Berlin Wall in 1989, the importance of the station took off gradually. Until the opening of the new north- south trunk railway tunnel on 28 May 2006 still wrong all trains from Berlin to Dresden / Leipzig Airport Station. After that, the traffic was largely shifted to the shorter north- south trunk railway to the new Berlin Central Station.

With the current expansion of the airport Berlin- Schönefeld Berlin -Brandenburg airport this was a new terminal. Under the Terminal, the new airport railway station was built. It is envisaged that the regional transport is then only move to the new station, the old station Schönefeld only remains for the S -Bahn and running and will then re- Schönefeld ( b Berlin) hot.

Compounds

Until the opening of the new Berlin Central Station in June 2006, coming from Halle / Leipzig and Dresden trains on the Berlin outer ring were initially led to Schönefeld and from there towards the city alley. The re- commissioning of the Anhalt line makes this detour obsolete, eliminating almost all long-distance connections through the Berlin Südkreuz were conducted.

With the opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport S-Bahn lines are to be extended to the new underground airport station. All features of the regional and long-distance traffic should then also be performed on this station and no longer the station Berlin- Schönefeld airport use.
