Bhanu Athaiya

Bhanumati " Bhanu " Athaiya (birth name: Bhanumati Annasaheb Rajopadhye; Marathi: भानू अथय्या, Bhanu Athayyā; born April 28, 1926 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India) is an Indian costume, which at the Academy Awards in 1983 for Gandhi an Oscar for Best Costume Design received and thus was the first Indian nationals, who won an Oscar.

Life

Bhanu Athaiya, the art at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art studying in Bombay, began her career as a costume designer in the film industry in 1955 with the film Milap and worked until 2004 at the Costume features more than 150 films. During her decades-long career, she has worked with renowned directors like Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra, Raj Kapoor and Ashutosh Gowariker.

At the Academy Awards in 1983 she won the Oscar along with John Mollo for the best costume design in Gandhi ( 1982) by Richard Attenborough with Ben Kingsley, Candice Bergen and Edward Fox in the lead roles. By their victory, she became the first Indian nationals, who won an Oscar. At the same time she and John Mollo also received a nomination for the British Academy Film Award for the best costumes.

In 1990, she won the most prestigious film award of India, the National Film Award for Best Costume Design in the fantasy film musical Lekin ... (1990 ) by Gulzar with Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia and Amjad Khan. Another National Film Award for Best Costume Design, she received 2001 Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India ( 2001) by Ashutosh Gowariker starring Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh and Rachel Shelley.

2009 received Bhanu Athaiya along with Om Puri the price for their lifetime ( Lifetime Achievement Award ) of the Filmfare Awards, the oldest and most prestigious awards, the Hindi films and filmmakers will be awarded in India.
