Bize-Minervois

Bize -Minervois is a commune with 1086 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Geography

Bize -Minervois is located north of Narbonne in the Cessetal. The north of the municipality is located in the Minervois. Neighboring municipalities are in the north of Saint -Jean -de- Minervois, Assignan and Villespassans, Cruzy, Montouliers and Argeliers in the east, Ginestas and Sainte- Valière in the south, Mailhac, Aigues -Vives and Agel in the West.

History

In the north of the municipal territory, the fonts were at that time the oldest known human remains found in 1827 by Paul Tournal in the caves Las. It has been proven that Neanderthals and Cro- Magnon people lived in the caves. The name Bize was first mentioned in the year 1000. From the end of the 19th century large wineries and castles originated were built.

Demographics

The current mayor since 2001 Alain Fabre. On March 23, 2014 he was re-elected in the municipal elections.

Culture and sights

In Bize -Minervois, there are several places of interest:

  • Classified as a monument historique cave Las fonts
  • Église Saint- Michel, which was built in the 18th century
  • Porte Saint- Michel, part of the fortress wall, built in the Middle Ages
  • Wine castles built in the late 19th century

Economy and infrastructure

South of the church is the Departmental core 5, which leads from Beziers to Carcassonne. Other smaller roads leading to neighboring communities.

Bize has a station on the railway line Narbonne- Bize. This line was opened on 4 July 1887. The passenger had to be discontinued in 1939. Nowadays still sporadic freight takes place. The station building is now used as Occitan school.

The municipality is located in the Minervois wine region. In addition, tourism plays an important role.
