Armissan

Armissan is a commune with 1551 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to the district of Narbonne and the Canton Coursan.

Geography

The municipality is located Armissan from the Mediterranean coast six kilometers east of Narbonne and eight kilometers. The east of the Autoroute A9 preferred part of the municipality of Armissan is part of the Regional Park Narbonnaise en Méditerranée. To Armissan heard the hamlet Cazeneuve.

The municipal area extends from the lying between the Aude and the large lagoon Etang de Bages - Sigean and Etang de l' Ayrolle level in the west to the heights of the Massif de la Clape (also called Montagne de la Clappe ) in the east. The isolated residential, maximum height reached 214 meters massif is only about 150 square kilometers and forms the north-eastern foothills of the Pyrenees.

The settlement area of the municipality stretches along the Mayral valley, surrounded by wine cultures on the slopes and up to 100 meters high, wooded loose rocks. The flat west of the municipal area is almost exclusively dominated by viticulture, whose documents are part of the small wine region Clape, immediately northeast of the Corbières wine region.

The municipality is bordered to the north by Armissan Vinassan, in the east, south and west, the community is surrounded by the territory of the city of Narbonne.

History

In the year 977 the town first appeared as Artimicianum. Using found during excavations marble and bronze statues of Greek goddesses, it is assumed that the name is inspired by the goddess Artemis. About Armisanum ( 1235 ) and Armyssa ( 1537 ), the place name eventually evolved to the present Armissan ( since 1781 ).

In the 1970s and 1980s was west of the old village, a residential estate.
