Bob Nystrom

Thore Robert " Bob" Nystrom ( born October 10, 1952 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a former Canadian ice hockey player ( Right Wing ), who played from 1972 to 1986 for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League.

His son Eric Nystrom is also a professional hockey player.

Career

Bob Nystrom was born in Stockholm, but at the age of four years, he came to Canada with his parents. After he had played during his junior time for the Calgary Centinentals in the Western Canada Hockey League, where he was noticed by its robust way of playing the Scouts, the New York Islanders selected him in the NHL Amateur Draft 1972 in the second round of the 33 players.

The Islanders had as a new team in the NHL not yet grown squad and he was already in the 1972/73 season in his first eleven missions in the NHL. However, the bulk of this season he spent in de American Hockey League with the New Haven Nighthawks. In his second year he was able to fight for a regular place in the Islanders. He quickly reached a level that would get him about 20 goals and 100 penalty minutes in a season. In this area, he stayed over the following ten years. In a forward line with Bob Bourne he succeeded in 1977/ 78, a record again with 30 hits. He had his greatest success from 1980 to 1983, when he could win the Stanley Cup with the Islanders four times in a row. In addition Bourne was in these years Wayne Merrick as the third man next to him on the ice. In the first Cup win he scored nine goals in the playoffs. Especially in overtime was always danger from him and he could decide as some games for the Islanders.
