Boer Republics

Under Boer Republics ( nld. and afr. Boerenrepublieke, occasionally Boer free states or South African Republics ) refers to a number of states, in the late 18th and in the 19th century by the Boers ( European colonists mostly of Dutch origin ) in the territory of the present Republic of South Africa were founded. Many of them had only a short time, which could best known of their existence but maintained about 50 years.

History

You may be among the Boer republics distinguish two types: those that arose prior to the so-called Great Trek, and those who were called then.

First Phase

The Boer Republics of the first kind were founded by colonists who rebelled against the Dutch East India Company (VOC). This had then held the supremacy over the Cape Colony. It was with them de facto short-lived city-states. These include:

  • Republic of Graaff -Reinet, regardless of 6 February 1795 to the August 22, 1796
  • Republic of Swellendam, independently between June and November 1795

Second phase

Territorial far greater and more stable republics were founded in the wake of the emigration of the Boers from the Cape Colony, after this in 1814 ( annexation of Cape Town ) had finally fallen to the UK. The British led the British case law as well as English as a national language and created in 1833 the slavery. Especially the latter proved to be very detrimental to the Boers, often based on the economic basis of the attitude of domestic slaves. Enraged by this circumstances left many Boers in the following years, the Cape Province and settled further north to beyond the Orange and Vaal rivers.

There the Boers founded new states of their own:

1836 Republic of Winburg until 1844, merged into Republic of Winburg - Potchefstroom

Potchefstroom 1837 Republic until 1844, merged into Republic of Winburg - Potchefstroom

1839 Republic of Natalia to 1843

1844 Republic of Winburg - Potchefstroom to 1848

1849 Republic of Lydenburg to 1860

1852 Republic of Utrecht until 1858

1852 South African Republic ( Transvaal ) to 1901

1854 Orange Free State until 1901

1882 Stella country until 1883, merged into United States of Stellaland

1882 Republic of Goshen until 1883, merged into United States of Stellaland

1883 United States of Stellaland to 1885

1884 Nieuwe Republiek to 1887

1886 Small Vrystaat to 1891

Griqua territories

Some state-like communities were founded by so-called Griqua ( half-breeds ):
