The community Borgarbyggð is an Icelandic community in the region Vesturland.

On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 3744 inhabitants. The two largest settlements in Borgarbyggð are the capital of West Iceland Borgarnes with 1955 inhabitants and Hvanneyri with 289 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2009).

Geography

Borgarbyggð is located in the west of Iceland. The municipality is bordered to the west Faxaflói, on the northwest by the Haffjörður with the island Gamlaeyri and the community Eyja -og Miklaholtshreppur. In the north- west of the township the Eldborgarhraun Lava Field and the Hnappadalur lies with the two lakes Oddastaðavatn and Hlíðavatn. To the east of these lakes is the lake Hítarvatn, to the southeast of the Langavatn, still farther to the east of the Hreðavatn with the place Bifrost. In the southwest of the lake-rich area is Borgarbyggð Mýrar.

To the north of the municipal territory, the boroughs Dalabyggð and Hunathing vestra, northeast Húnavatnshreppur. In the southeast of the municipality are the mountain and the lava field structure shall Hallmundarhraun near the glacier Eiríksjökull. The big Langjökull with its tributary glaciers Geitlandsjökull, the shield volcano Ok and the Kaldidalur are in the east or south-east of the township. Southeast of the village is located Borgarbyggð Grímsnes -og Grafningshreppur with the Þórisjökull include parts of which to Borgarbyggð. South of Borgarbyggð the boroughs Skorradalshreppur and Hvalfjarðarsveit.

Parts of the municipality are in the Icelandic highlands.

The river empties into the Hvítá Borgarfjorður, which was also the main town Borgarnes is. Well-known waterfalls are the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss.

History

The community Borgarbyggð was formed on 11 June 1994 by the merger of four municipalities: These were:

  • The municipality Borgarnes ( Borgarnesbær )
  • The rural community of Norðurárdalur ( Norðurárdalshreppur )
  • The rural community of Stafholstungur ( Stafholstungnahreppur )
  • The rural community of Hraun ( Hraunhreppur ).

On 7 June 1998, the rural communities Álftanes ( Álftaneshreppur ), Borg ( Borgarhreppur ) and Þverárhlíð were incorporated ( Þverárhlíðarhreppur ).

On 27 May 2006, the municipality Borgarbyggð was combined with the following municipalities merged to Borgarbyggð:

  • Borgarfjarðarsveit: Borgarfjarðarsveit counted in 2005 732 inhabitants and had a size of 1,254 km ². It was formed on 7 June 1998 by the merger of the four rural communities Andakílshreppur, Lundarreykjadalur ( Lundarreykjadalshreppur ) Reykholtsdalur ( Reykholtsdalshreppur ) and Hálsahreppur. The three largest settlements were Hvanneyri with 230 inhabitants, Kleppjárnsreykir with 50 inhabitants and Reykholt with 33 inhabitants ( 2005).
  • Hvítarsíða ( Hvítarsíðuhreppur ): Hvítársíða counted in 2005, 83 inhabitants and had a size of 1,482 km ². Hvítársíða was one of the few municipalities Islands, which are not confined to the sea. They occupied the northern part of the Hvítá Valley. The church places were Síðumúli and Gilsbakki.
  • Kolbeinsstaðir ( Kolbeinsstaðahreppur ): Kolbeinsstaðir counted in 2005, 102 inhabitants and had a size of 347 km ².

The alternative name Brákarbyggð, Mýrabyggð and Sveitarfélagið Borgarfjorður could not enforce the electorate.

Places

Borgarnes

The main town of the municipality lies on the Borgarnes Borgarfjorður. It is close to the volcano cooled Hafnarfjall is.

Bifrost

In the center of the village with 227 inhabitants, the Bifrost private business school Háskólinn á Bifrost is located.

Hvanneyri

The village Hvanneyri with the Agricultural University also belongs to this community.

Húsafell

Húsafell is especially important for tourism. It is close to the lava field about Hallmundarhraun and the waterfalls Hraunfossar.

Reykholt

The small town Reykholt was the residence of the poet Snorri Sturluson Goden and in the Middle Ages.

Kleppjárnsreykir

The place Kleppjárnsreykir has mainly a variety of hot springs. How Reykholt it is in Reykholtsdalur. The spring water is used for heating of greenhouses and growing tomatoes, peppers and carrots. The source Deildartunguhver located about two kilometers from Kleppjárnsreykir away.

Population Development

Due mostly to the increase in population of Borgarnes Bifrost and the church is a growing church.
