Borough of Colchester

Colchester is a local government district with the status of a borough in the county of Essex in England. It is named after its administrative headquarters Colchester. It extends from Dedham Vale on the Suffolk border in the north to Mersea Iceland to the south. Other major towns are West Mersea and Wivenhoe.

The district was formed on 1 April 1974 and evolved from the merger of the town of Colchester, the Urban Districts West Mersea and Wivenhoe and the Rural Districts Lexden and Winstree.
