Harlow

Harlow is a town in Essex in southeast England. It was created in 1947 as a New Town from the villages of Harlow, Great Parndon, Latton, Little Parndon Cute and Well and today, with about 80,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest northeastern suburbs of London. Administratively, Harlow is both a city and district in Essex.

Harlow was the first British city, which was equipped with a pedestrian street in the city center; was also built here in 1951 the first residential high-rise in the country; it is now a protected monument.

Location

Harlow is located about 30 km northeast of London's city center. It has an easy motorway access to the M11 (London- Cambridge ) and a station on the route London- Cambridge.

History

The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period; in Parndon an ax was found, which has been dated to about 6000 BC. The name Harlow indicates a foundation by the Anglo-Saxons. Harlow was mentioned in the Magna Carta and long remained a typical country village.

Policy

Harlow is a constituency of the British House of Commons and is currently (2006) represented by the Labour politician Bill Rammell. He could stand up in 2005 with a narrow margin of 97 votes against his conservative challenger. The expansion as a New Town after the Second World War goes back to the city planner Sir Frederick Gibberd.
