Calexico (Band)

Calexico is an American band from Tucson, Arizona, founded by Joey Burns and John Convertino.

Band History

The founding members Joey Burns and John Convertino originally played in the group Giant Sand with Howe Gelb. Inspired by a variety of old instruments that they found in the camps of music stores, the idea to form a band and create a mix based on acoustic instruments sound originated. Under the name she spoke published in 1997 in the Bavarian independent label house music their first album on LP. If published on CD, the band had renamed in Calexico, Spoke was then only the title of the album. Within a few years Calexico was with atmospheric songs and instrumental pieces, which were often compared to film soundtracks, both in America and in Europe with great success.

In addition, Burns and Convertino founded along with Bill Elm, the band Friends of Dean Martinez, but they left after a short time.

Style

The band brings together different styles of music like Mexican mariachi, folk and country - rock, Latin jazz or Desert and Gringo Rock. The style is now referred to as " Tucson Desert Rock."

Important geographical and political points that determine the creativity of Calexico, the desert and especially the border between the United States and Mexico ( Calexico is the name of a place and a portmanteau of California and Mexico). The political and social situation at the border is an important issue for Calexico and is found in many of their songs again, as in Across the Wire, a ballad about two brothers trying in the hope of a better life, to cross the border. Also the piece Crystal Frontier, inspired by the book The Glass limit ( 1995) by Carlos Fuentes, sets themselves artistically with the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico.
