Calvert is a city in Robertson County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in east-central Texas, the Texas Golden Triangle between Dallas, Houston and Austin, 150 km east of Austin, 100 km south-east of Waco and has a total area of 10.1 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Calvert was founded in 1868 and named after Robert Calvert, a plantation owner and initiator of railway construction by the County. Until 1879, the city was also the county seat ( county seat ). The today is a privately owned former District Court building of red brick was built in 1876.

1873 many of the inhabitants died of yellow fever, in 1899 the city was inundated by a flood and largely destroyed, and two years later destroyed by the great fire, the business district, after which the population of 3322 in 1900 dropped to 2099-1920.

Demographics

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,426 people in 574 households and 374 families. The population density was 141.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 36.89 % White, 52.38 % African American, 0.42 % Native American, 0.07 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 8.77 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.47% were of mixed descent, and 14.87 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 574 households 27.4 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 34.7 % were married couples living together. 25.4% were single mothers and 34.7 % were non-families. 32.4 % of all households were single-person households, and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size amounted to 3.07.

29.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.1 % from 18 to 24, 21.9% 25-44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.1 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 85.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 78.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 18,105, and the median income for a family $ 23,214. Males had a median income of $ 24,722 versus $ 17,885 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,165. 36.9 % of the population and 30.3% of families are below the poverty line. Of which 53.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 32.6 % of those 65 or older.
