Canossa

Canossa is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3836 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Reggio Emilia in Emilia -Romagna. The community is located about 20 kilometers southwest of Reggio Emilia at the Enza in the upper Apennines. The name of the village comes from the high-lying eponymous castle. The main town and administrative center is Ciano d' Enza. The municipality of Canossa is immediately adjacent to the province of Parma. Canossa belongs to the Comunità montana dell'Appennino Reggiano.

History

The municipality is the former settlement Luceria, the Ligurian- Etruscan in origin and probably lasted until the early Middle Ages.

The history of the village is still closely associated with the medieval castle. This was built by the son of Siegfried Lombards ( the founder of the family of Canossa ), Adalbert Atto in the first half of the 10th century. Here resided the Countess Matilda of Canossa. 1077 moved King Henry IV as a penitent from Speyer to Canossa, where the pope was staying at that time ( the so-called Canossa ).

The dynasty of the Canossa family begins with the Lombards Siegfried beginning of the 10th century AD, was originally from Lucca.
