Carlos Moyá

Carlos Moyá Llompart ( Catalan: Carles Moyà Llompart; born August 27, 1976 in Palma de Mallorca ) is a former Spanish tennis player. It was 1999, the number one world tennis rankings.

Career

Moyá began his professional career in 1995. During the same year he won in Buenos Aires his first ATP title. His first final at a Grand Slam tournament reached Moyá 1997 at the Australian Open. On the way, he suggested, inter alia, Boris Becker and Michael Chang. In the final he defeated then the former world number one Pete Sampras. In the same year Moyá reached the semifinals of the ATP World Championships in Hanover, and this time he was able to defeat Sampras in the first round. In the semifinals, he lost to then Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

1998 Moyá won the French Open his only Grand Slam title. He also reached the final of the ATP World Championships, where he lost to Àlex Corretja. On 15 March 1999 Moyá was number 1 in the world. He held the top position in the world rankings for two weeks.

After two weak years Moyá 2002 won the Masters in Cincinnati and qualified for the Masters Cup in Shanghai. There he reached the semifinals, where he lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero. In 2004 he won the Masters tournament in Rome. 2007 Moyá reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, before he lost Rafael Nadal 4:6, 3:6 and 0:6. The end of July he won the tournament in Umag.

In April 2009 Moyá left after a blow to the hip surgery, he then had to take a forced break of several months. The beginning of 2010, he returned to the ATP Tour, but failed mostly in the first round. He defeated among others the German Benjamin Becker at the Madrid Masters smooth with 0:6 and 2:6. This match in May 2010 was to be his last on the tour. In November 2010 Moyá announced his retirement from professional tennis due to persistent foot problems. He was formally proclaimed as part of the ATP World Tour Finals 2010 in London.

Currently Moyá plays on the ATP Champions Tour, he is also captain of Spain 's Davis Cup team.

Play

Moyá had with up to 218 km / h strong serve. In competition, he tried mainly to use his strong forehand. The backhand, he played with both hands. He was especially successful on clay courts. Although he is left-handed, he played tennis with his right hand.
