Cercado is a province in the central part of the department of Tarija in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Cercado Province is one of six provinces in the department of Tarija. It lies between 21 ° 15 'and 21 ° 51' south latitude and between 64 ° 20 ' and 65 ° 00 ' west longitude.

The province is bordered on the northwest by the province Eustaquio Méndez, to the southwest by the province of José María Avilés, in the south of the province Aniceto Arce, and on the east by the province of Burnet O'Connor.

The province extends over a length of 80 kilometers in north-south direction and 80 km in east-west direction.

Geography

The Cercado Province is conveniently situated between the different climate zones of the country, bordering the Andes at about 1,900 m above sea level. NN. , So usually mild and pleasant weather prevails. In the rainy season from December to February (summer months) often leads to torrential thunderstorms. Through the centuries of deforestation, the landscape is eroded and surrounded the city from a barren mountain range. At one time the area around Tarija was the granary of Bolivia. Today, the special richness of the region lies in the natural gas.

Population

The population of the province of Cercado has risen in the past two decades to nearly double:

99.4 percent of the population speak Spanish, 11.5 percent Quechua, Aymara 2.4 percent, and 0.2 percent Guaraní. (1992)

26.0 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 39.4 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

12.2 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 0.1 percent in mining, 11.5 percent in industry, 76.2 percent in services ( 2001).

89.6 percent of the population are Catholics, 6.3 percent are Protestant (1992).
