Gran Chaco is a province in the eastern part of the department of Tarija in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Gran Chaco Province is one of six provinces in the department of Tarija. It lies between 21 ° 00 'and 22 ° 17' south latitude and between 62 ° 16 'and 64 ° 18 ' west longitude.

The province is bordered on the north by the department of Chuquisaca, in the northwest of the province Burnet O'Connor, on the southwest by the province of Aniceto Arce, on the south by the Republic of Argentina, and on the east by the Republic of Paraguay.

The province extends over a length of 200 kilometers in north-south direction and 200 km in east-west direction.

Population

The population of the province of Gran Cahco has risen in the past two decades to nearly double:

41.9 percent of the population are younger than 15 years.

98.4 percent of the population speak Spanish, 11.5 percent Quechua, Aymara 3.0 percent, and 2.7 percent Guaraní.

50.7 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 41.1 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

19.1 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 1.4 percent in mining, 8.3 percent in industry, 71.2 percent in services ( 2001).

86.8 percent of the population are Catholics, 9.4 percent are Protestant (1992).

Structure

The province is divided into the following three municipios ( counties ):

  • Municipio Caraparí ( 2743 km ²) in the southwestern part of the province - 10,034 inhabitants - 3.7 inhabitants / km ²
  • The municipality of Villa Montes ( 10,699 km ²) in the northern and eastern part of the province - 27,550 inhabitants - 2.6 inhabitants / km ²
  • Municipio Yacuíba ( 4058 km ²) in the southern part of the province - 138 414 inhabitants - 34.1 inhabitants / km ²
