Charles Gwathmey

Charles Gwathmey ( born June 19, 1938 in Charlotte, North Carolina; † August 3, 2009 in Manhattan ) was an American architect.

Life

Born as the only child of the painter Robert Gwathmey and photographer Rosalie Gwathmey, he studied from 1956 to 1959 at the University of Pennsylvania, then to 1962 at Yale University, where he earned a Master of Architecture. Gwathmey taught from 1964 to 1977 as a professor at several American universities, including at Pratt Institute and Cooper Union. With several projects Gwathmey worked with Richard Henderson and Robert Siegel. In 1968 he founded with the latter, the still existing architectural firm Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects. It created numerous residences for wealthy Americans, along with several museums and commercial buildings.
