Cheiry

Cheiry ( Freiburg Patois Tseri? / I ) is a municipality in the district Broye the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. With effect from 1 January 2005, the previously independent community Chapelle (Broye ) was incorporated into Cheiry.

Geography

Cheiry is located on 563 m above sea level. M., 12 km south-west of Payerne ( straight line ) in the Fribourgese exclave Surpierre. The farming village in the valley extends the Lembe, above the mouth of a springing on the plateau of Combremont page creek, in the hill country west of the Broyetals, in the western Fribourg plateau.

The area of ​​6.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Molassehügellandes between Lake Neuchâtel and the middle Broyetal. The area is crossed from the southwest to the northeast of the Lembe, which has a 200 to 500 m wide, flat Talniederung. The valley is accompanied on its northwestern side of the heights of La Maule ( 679 m above sea level. M. ) and Bois d' Aclex, in the southeast of the forest heights Bois d' amont and Grand Bois ( ridge between the valleys of Lembe and Broye). The highest point of Cheiry is 711 m above sea level. M. reached on the northern slope of the Bois d' amont. From the municipality surface 1997 7 % was attributable to settlements, 25 % of forest and woody plants and 68 % to agriculture.

To Cheiry include the hamlet Chapelle (Broye ) ( 622 m above sea level. M. ) on the grounds terrace Fin de la gola left of Lembetals, Coumin lingerie (520 m above sea level. M. ) on the Lembe and Coumin -Dessus ( 558 m above sea M. ). onto a terrace on the right flank of the Lembe as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Cheiry are Prévondavaux and Surpierre in the Canton of Fribourg and Forel -sur -Lucens, Granges- près- Marnand, Sassel Combremont -le- Grand and Combremont- le -Petit in the canton of Vaud.

Population

With 365 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Cheiry is one of the small communities of the Canton of Fribourg. Of the 89.1% inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 7.0 % and 1.5 % speak English (as of 2000). The population of Cheiry amounted in 1850 to 418 residents in 1900 to 379 inhabitants (including today is my finished Chapelle ). During the 20th century, the population increased by strong emigration until 1980 it further decreased to 258 people. Only since a significant population growth was recorded again.

Economy

Cheiry was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the agriculture, the cultivation of tobacco, dairy farming and livestock have an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the region Payerne.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares on a link road from Granges -près- Marnand after Thierrens. By Postbus course, which runs from Granges- près- Marnand after Cheiry, the village is connected to the network of public transport.

History

The territory of Cheiry was settled very early, which was confirmed by several finds of devices that were used in the La Tène period. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1185 under the name Chirie. Later the spellings Zeiry ( 1295) and Cheirier (1668 ) published. The place name comes from the Roman personal name Carius.

Since the Middle Ages Cheiry was under the rule Surpierre. With this, the village came on February 21, 1536 Bern, and on March 1, 1536 under the rule of Freiburg, where it was assigned to the Bailiwick Surpierre. In 1624 almost all the houses of the village fell victim to a conflagration. After the collapse of the ancien régime (1798 ) was one Cheiry during the Helvetic Republic until 1803 Estavayer district and then to the district Surpierre before it was incorporated in 1848 in the District Broye. In the headlines Cheiry came in 1994, when in a house 23 members of the Solar Temple mass suicide committed.

As part of since 2000 sponsored by the Canton of Fribourg municipal mergers, the previously politically independent community Chapelle (Broye ) was amalgamated with effect from 1 January 2005 Cheiry.

Attractions

Since 1228 owned Cheiry a parish church. Today's modern building dates from 1967. Situated in the center and some characteristic farmhouses of the 17th to 19th century are still preserved.
