Cherkasy

Cherkasy (Ukrainian Черкаси; Russian Черкассы ) is a town with 286,000 inhabitants in the center of Ukraine.

Cherkassy was first mentioned in 1394 as a city. It is located about 160 km southeast of Kiev on the south bank of the Krementschukschen reservoir, which is here formed by the Dnepr. Cherkassy is the administrative, economic and cultural center of Cherkassy Oblast. The city has a state and a technical university.

During the construction of the Druzhba route (1975-1986) was the seat of the Cherkassy Construction Authority for the portion of Krementschuk up bar, which was acquired by the GDR.

The city consists of two Stadtrajonen ( Rajon Prydnipro and Rajon Sosniw ) and the settlement Orschanez ( Оршанець ).

Traffic

Cherkassy is on the railway line Moscow - Odessa. These crosses north of the city on a 12 km long road and rail overpass the dammed reservoir to Krementschuker Dnepr. The local transport is done mainly with a 1965 O- opened urban bus network, with currently 10 lines as well as private bus operators on urban licensed lines.
