Chris Menges

Chris Menges ( born September 15, 1940 in Kingston, Herefordshire, England ) is a British cinematographer and film director and member of the " British Society of Cinematographers ".

Life

Menges turned as a cinematographer his first films in the early 1970s in England. Since the early 1980s, he is considered one of the most respected cinematographers in Europe. The film Local Hero by Bill Forsyth in 1983 then opened him the doors in Hollywood.

His first Oscar he won in 1985 for The Killing Fields by Roland Joffé. He repeated together with Joffé 1987 with the film Mission this success. These successes encouraged him to work as a director. 1988 was the then great success with the film Two Worlds, a drama about the South African journalist Ruth First ( played by Barbara Hershey ). The film won at the Cannes Film Festival 1988 Grand Jury Prize.

In 1997 he was nominated for his camera work in Neil Jordan's film Michael Collins about the Irish freedom fighters again for an Oscar. For his work on Tommy Lee Jones's Three Burials Western - The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, he was nominated at the Independent Spirit Awards 2006, where he was but in the race for Best Cinematography George Clooney 's drama Good Night, and Good Luck. was beaten and Robert Elswit won the award.

Followed in 2009 with Roger Deakins an Oscar nomination for Stephen Daldry's film adaptation The Reader (2008).

Chris Menges lives in Wales.
