Copa Rio (international tournament)

The Torneio Internacional de Clubes Champ to the Copa Rio was a football competition to determine an association titlist. He was from the Brazilian Football Federation Confederação Brasileira de Desportos (CBD ) held jointly with FIFA and found both 1951 and 1952 held in Brazil.

History

After completion of the Football World Cup 1950 in Brazil, the Brazilian Football Federation in cooperation with FIFA tried to make a similar competition for clubs on the legs. The idea stemmed from the journalist Mário Filho. Thus began a pre-selection for the best teams from Europe and South America until corresponding eight candidates could qualify. To support their clubs also the championship was suspended a month in Uruguay as well as in São Paulo. The first tournament was held to 22 July 1951 by June 30. As a venue used were the Estádio do Maracanã and the Estádio do Pacaembu the two largest stadiums in the country. First, two groups were played and then the semi-finals and finals with two matches. The first, the Brazilian representative Palmeiras São Paulo could enter the list of winners, the club was presented by FIFA Secretary General Ottorino Barassi, the silver cup. The second tournament lasted 13 July to 2 August 1952, saw Fluminense FC as the second world champion also a club from Brazil.
