Daejeon

Daejeon? / I [ tɛ tɕʌn ː ] is a city in central South Korea. It is with 1,539,154 inhabitants, the fifth largest city in South Korea. Daejeon is located between the provinces of Chungcheongbuk -do and Chungcheongnam -do; it is the capital of Chungcheongnam -do ( abgek.: Chungnam ), although it is politically a separate entity.

History

By the end of large - Korea (1910 ) Daejeon was a small village.

Between 1910 and 1945, Korea was part of the Japanese Empire. Since Japanese was the national language at this time, the city name was大田japanese read Taiden.

The town developed after the railroad was completed in 1914. Daejeon is located at an important intersection.

During the Korean War Daejeon was temporarily the capital of South Korea and about 70 % of the city were completely destroyed. Daejeon later grew as a center of textile industry, mechanical engineering and chemical industries.

In Daejeon are the Chungnam National University, Korea Aerospace Research Institute, South Korea Space Agency, and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology ( KAIST ), South Korea's leading university in the field of engineering.

In 1993, the Great Exhibition was held in Daejeon. The EXPO bridge was built for the occasion. Soccer World Cup 2002 there were three games take place in the newly built Daejeon World Cup Stadium.

The city Yuseong district is in the northwest of Daejeon and is known for its hot springs. This is also the main campus of Chungnam National University.

The city is completely surrounded by wooded hills, on well-maintained trails can be hike around Daejeon.
