David Allen Smalley

David Allen Smalley ( born April 6, 1809 in Middlebury, Addison County, Vermont, † March 10, 1877 in Burlington, Vermont ) was an American politician and 1856-1860 Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, the party organization of the U.S. Democrats.

David Allen Smalley studied law in Jericho, where he began to practice as a lawyer. In this place he practiced 1831-1836 from the office of postmaster. After he was first drawn to Lowell, he later settled in 1836 in Burlington down.

He was also politically active. From 1843 to 1844 Smalley was a member of the Senate from Vermont. At the Democratic National Convention of 1852 in Baltimore, he served as Vice President of the Congress and as a member of the Committee on the party platform ( Platform committee ). He was also elected to the Democratic National Committee. In April 1853, U.S. President Franklin Pierce appointed him to head the customs authority ( Collector of customs) of Vermont.

At the Democratic convention in 1856 in Cincinnati Smalley was then elected Chairman of the party organization. On February 3, 1857, he came to succeed the late Samuel Prentiss as a judge at the Federal District Court for the District of Vermont, where he stayed until his death. The Democrats, he led up to the National Convention of 1860 in Charleston, during which it came to the split in the party, which culminated in the American Civil War.
