Addison County, Vermont

Addison County is a county located in the state of Vermont in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Middlebury.

Geography

The County is located in west-central Vermont, on the west by New York and has an area of 2,093 square kilometers, of which 99 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Chittenden County, Washington County, Orange County, Windsor County, Rutland County, Washington County ( New York) and Essex County ( New York).

The area lies on the south eastern shore of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. Two thirds of the area consist of the lowlands along these two waters; only the eastern third of the county of lies in the western foothills of the Green Mountains. The plane is used for agriculture; it dominates the dairy industry. The wooded hillside areas of the Green Mountains are primarily used in the timber industry, and secondarily to tourism.

The largest river is the running from south to north through the County Otter Creek, which is navigable to Vergennes; the highest point is Mount Abraham with 1224 m. Largest city and economic center is the administrative headquarters Middlebury.

History

Addison County was formed on February 27, 1787 from parts of Rutland County.

Demographic data

1900-1990

According to the census of 2000, there were 35 974 people in the county. There were 13,068 households, and 9,108 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.86 % White, 0.54 % African American, 0.26 % Native American, 0.73 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.29 % percent from other ethnic groups; 1.29% were descended from two or more races. 1.10% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 13,068 households out of which 34.40 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.40 % were married couples living together, 8.30% had a female householder with no husband. 30.30 % were non-families. 23.40% of all households were individuals and 8.90 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.02.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 24.90 % under the age of 18, 12.50 % from 18 to 24, 26.90 % from 25 to 44 years, 24.30 % between 45 and 64 years and 11.30% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.70 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.40 males.

The median income for a household was $ 43,142, and the median income for a family was $ 49,351. Males have a median income of $ 31,836, women $ 24,416. The per capita income was $ 19,539. 8.60 % of the population and 5.10% of families are below the poverty line. 9.10% of those under age 18 and 8.00% were 65 years or older.
