David Cargo

David Francis Cargo ( born January 13, 1929 in Dowagiac, Cass County, Michigan, † July 5, 2013 in Albuquerque, New Mexico ) was an American politician. He was from 1967 to 1971 Governor of the State of New Mexico.

Life

Early years and political rise

David Cargo attended the University of Michigan, where he studied law among others. His law degree, he passed in 1957. His studies were interrupted by his military service. This he spent 1953-1955 in the U.S. Army in Germany.

Cargo was a member of the Republican Party. He belonged to the liberal wing, who was close to Nelson Rockefeller. Between 1963 and 1967, Cargo was a member of the House of Representatives from New Mexico. When he decided in 1966 to run for the office of governor, he had to free himself from the conservative wing of the party only within his party in the primaries.

Governor of New Mexico

After successful for him governor elections of 1966 Cargo took up his new post on 1 January 1967. After a re-election in 1968, he was able to exercise it until 1 January 1971. During this time, the foundation for the environmental protection policy of New Mexico was laid. He told them to put many areas as parks under protection. Governor Cargo also founded the state film commission in New Mexico and developed personal contacts to Hollywood. In some films he had small cameos. Under his rule, the tenure of the governors of two to four -year extension. However, this amendment came into force after the expiry of his term.

In 1970, he was not allowed to run directly back because of a constitutional provision. Therefore, Cargo applied, unsuccessfully, for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Between 1973 and 1985 he lived in Lake Oswego (Oregon ). There, he applied unsuccessfully in 1984 for the post of finance minister. He then returned to New Mexico. He failed again in 1986 in an attempt to be elected to Congress. Even his attempt to become mayor of Albuquerque, as well as in 1994 failed for reelection as governor of his state. With his wife Ida David Cargo has five children.
