Dondușeni District

The Rajon Donduşeni is a Raion in Moldova. The Rajonshauptstadt is Donduşeni.

Geography

The Rajon located in the north of the country and along the river Dniester has a narrow border section with Ukraine. The neighboring districts are Drochia, Edineţ Ocniţa, Rîşcani and Soroca.

History

The Rajon Donduşeni has existed since 2003.

Population

Demographics

1959 54 386 inhabitants lived in what is now Rajons. By 1970 the population had risen to 57 467. Up to 46 442 of 57 092 in 1979, over 53,902 in 1989, in 2004 - the last which is significantly below the value of 1959: Contrary to the national trend, the number continuously decreased the population in the next three censuses.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census put the Moldovans with 80.3 % the proportionally largest ethnic group in Rajon Donduşeni, followed by the Ukrainians with 12.7% and the Russians with 5.8%. Smaller minorities form the Romanians with 0.5% and the Gagauz and Bulgarians, each with 0.1%.

Culture and sights

In the village of Taul is the largest Dendrological Park Moldova. Around the park there are several built in the early 20th century building and an agricultural college, founded in 1963, one of the oldest universities in the country.
