Douglas Blubaugh

Douglas Morlan " Doug " Blubaugh ( born December 31, 1934 in Ponca City, Kay / Osage County, Oklahoma, † May 16 in Toncawa, Kay County, Oklahoma, 2011 ) was an American freestyle wrestler and coach. He was Olympic champion in 1960.

Career

Doug Blubaugh was from Oklahoma and was the son of a farmer. With the rings he was in high school in touch. There he had many successes. This continued when he Oklahoma State University - Stillwater visited. He won several medals at the 1956 NCAA Championships and 1957 American NCAA champion. In 1957 he also won the U.S. championship in the welterweight division. All successes he achieved in free style. In 1959 he also won at the Pan-American Championships in Chicago. In 1960 he sat in the Olympic qualifiers against its competitors by Phil Kinyon and represented the U.S. at the Olympics in Rome. There he won the gold medal superior with seven wins, six wins shoulder. Only the Turkish İsmail Ogan gave him just one point victory. The victory against the defending champions Iran Imam Ali Habibi was a sensation.

Doug Blubaugh was a typical American high school wrestler. World Championships did not interest him. After his Olympic victory, he ended his career as a wrestler. He had played over 400 fights and lost only 17 of them. He was first assistant coach at several universities before he head coach at Indiana State University in 1972. In addition, he was also head coach of the U.S. national team, the freestyle wrestler. For his contributions to the sport wrestler he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1979.
