Drienov

Drienov (Slovak 1973-1980 " Drienov " - to 1927 " Drinov "; Hungarian Somos ) is a city and a municipality in Prešov Okres ( Prešov kraj ) in eastern Slovakia, with 2132 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011).

Geography

The municipality is located in the basin kotlina Košice ( Kassa basin ) the river Torysa, 14 km from Prešov and 21 km from Košice located.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1283. Drienov was historically a market town, major landowners in the Middle Ages came from Aba. 1828 are listed 140 houses and 1055 inhabitants.

Both the Slovak and the Hungarian name from the respective names of Cornelian cherries.

  • Originally a Gothic Roman Catholic church from the 14th century, today the Baroque style
  • Greek Catholic Church from 1902

Traffic

Approximately 1 km south of the town is connected to the D1 motorway ( Prešov - Košice ). Nearest railway station is in Kysak ( about 5 km).
