Dry Creek Valley AVA

Dry Creek Valley AVA ( recognized since 1983) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of California. The area is located in the northwestern part of the administrative area in Sonoma County, northwest of the municipality of Healdsburg. The valley was formed by the Dry Creek, a tributary of the Russian River and about 25 km long and max. 3 km wide. The viticulture is made possible only by an irrigation of vineyards. The water required for this purpose comes from the artificially dammed Lake Sonoma.

History

Beginning of the 20th century was the wine region one of the most important producers of wines from the vine Zinfandel. During the period of alcohol prohibition, the vines were replaced with plum, plum and pear trees. The world -famous company Sunsweet Growers in Healdsburg processed fruits and dried fruits exported the world. Since the early 1970s the wine regains much more important and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are the most important grape varieties. Sauvignon Blanc is currently the most important white grape variety of the valley.
