Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria

Duke Max in Bavaria (actually Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria) ( born December 4, 1808 in Bamberg, † November 15, 1888 in Munich) was from the line of the Dukes of Bavaria of the Wittelsbach family and was one of the main promoters of Bavarian folk music in 19th century.

Life

Max Joseph was the son of Duke Pius August in Bavaria (1786-1837) of the Wittelsbach Palatinate - Birkenfeld - by- line Gelnhausen and his wife Amalie Louise of Arenberg ( 1789-1823 ).

To care his education to be liberal -minded grandfather Wilhelm in Bavaria, so he from 1817 to 1824 in Munich, led by Benedict Holland OSB public educational Royal Institute for Students ( seminary Gregorianum ) attended. The grandfather also agreed to the marriage to King Maximilian I Joseph's daughter Ludovica, which took place in September 1828 against the will of the two old twenty years engaged couple.

After the death of his grandfather Max Joseph was a rich man and could afford almost everything. So he was from 1828 to 1831 in Munich a magnificent palace, designed by Leo build by Klenze, the Herzog- Max -Palais, in which it is not just a singing Café (Café - chantant bavarian. After eight months, he returned to his palace in Munich's Ludwig Street on September 17, 1838. In 1839 he was made an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

His marriage with the unloved wife was anything but happy, until shortly before the golden wedding he finally became reconciled with his wife and the couple spent the last ten years of marriage in harmony. Duke Max died after two strokes on 15 November, 1888. Many people proved the popular, populist Duke their last respects. The Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, including heir Rudolf were present, but not daughter Sisi, his favorite daughter. Empress Elisabeth had preferred to travel for recreation to Corfu.

In September 1828 Max Joseph married Ludovica a daughter of the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph. They had ten children:
