East Frisian peninsula

The term East Friesland is in the regional language and script used to distinguish it from Ostfriesland and usually describes the North Sea coastal region between Dollard and Jade Bay. Outside the region, this area is ( falsely) spread with " Ostfriesland " identified. Because the more " artificial" spelling East Friesland, however, even in the region has not met with great love in and is used less and less often, one reads in regional media increasingly the term " East Frisian peninsula " instead of " East Friesland ".

Area

While Ostfriesland comprises the territory of the former county of Ostfriesland, namely roughly the districts of Leer, Aurich and Witt mouth and the city of Emden, includes East Friesland usually in addition to other traditional Frisian areas of the peninsula with a: the city of Wilhelmshaven and Oldenburg district Friesland ( Jeverland and Frisian Wehde ).

More rarely, the Saterland will be added in the definition of East Friesland. These three areas ( Friesland district, Wilhelmshaven, Saterland ) alone to be called East Friesland, what you also encountered occasionally, however, is incorrect.

In its broadest definition with the term East Friesland even all Frisian areas in Lower Saxony circumscribed, ie those lands, which constitute the Inter-Frisian Council "section of the East " (ie to the above, also the former Rüstringen ( and Others butjadingen ), the Wursten and sometimes even more ).

If you want to highlight in the language that we speak of " East Friesland " and not " Ostfriesland ", then the "East" is emphasized, as is usually the emphasis on " fries".

Self-designation and delimitation

According to popular belief, the term Ostfriesland is used purely geographically and already includes the Friesland district and the city of Wilhelmshaven. However, this is not correct from " mutual " view. The residents of East Friesland ( without hyphen, counties Aurich, Leer and Witt mouth and Emden ) are the only ones who fully identify themselves as East Frisians. In the district of Friesland and Wilhelmshaven, however, this self-designation is hardly not used to. If the residents of the two communities not as Fries countries ( rare: Friesen ) or Wilhelmshaven call, then the focus is on the emphasis of the Oldenburg.

The name of Friesland owes the same county of its location in the northern Oldenburg region - ie in the Frisian part of Oldenburg. This leads to the Foreign often confusing fact that the district Friesland is located east of East Frisia.

The dividing line between East Frisia and Oldenburg Friesland district is the historic boundary between the former Principality of East Frisia and the County of Oldenburg and is called Golden Line. An attempt to bridge this quasi Golden Line, was made at the Lower Saxony district reform in the 1970s. At that time part of the Oldenburg district Friesland joined with the East Frisian district Witt mouth - under the name of the district of Friesland and headquartered in Witt mouth. After successful actions before the Court in Lower Saxony State Biickeburg this reform was reversed, divided the counties again. Only the old office Gödens, so the places Gödens, Neustadtgödens and Dykhusen, remaining after the manufacture of the old districts in the friesländischen Sande and thus represents a piece of Ostfriesland in the district of Friesland dar.

Wangerooge

The difference between historical- political and geographical view of East Friesland owes the island Wangerooge an " ambiguous " assignment one hand, it is counted geographically to the East Frisian Islands. On the other hand, they heard the history of politics for centuries to Jeverland and therefore since 1818 to Oldenburg, so today the district of Friesland. It is thus in a sense the only " Oldenburg " among the ( occupied ) East Frisian Islands.

Saterland

A special role is played by the Saterland. It is indeed culturally and historically spoke to Ostfriesland, but due to its isolated location early under the influence of the diocese of Münster, while the East Frisian room was subordinate to the Diocese of Bremen. This separation from the period of the late Middle Ages affects up to the present day from: The Saterland now belongs to the district of Cloppenburg. Thanks to the insulation the Saterfrisian could survive to this day as the only variety of the East Frisian language, while in the rest of East Frisian dialects of the Lower Saxon language spoken ( Ostfriesisches Platt).

Cooperations

On political and economic cooperation of the cities and counties within Eastern Friesland are now commonplace, as collaborations with areas that are outside of the East Frisian peninsula as the Emsland and the Ammer country.

The Industry and Commerce as is " Commerce and Industry Chamber of Ostfriesland and Papenburg " and includes not only the city of Emden and the districts of Aurich, Leer and Witt mouth the Emsland Papenburg, as the local port company and the Meyer Werft of economic geography will better the coastal strip Ostfriesland be allocated - a historical and political Papenburg would otherwise be assigned to the Chamber of Commerce in Osnabruck, like the rest of the district of Emsland also. The district of Friesland and the city of Wilhelmshaven, however Oldenburgische Industry and Commerce are assigned to it following the old boundaries of the Oldenburg State.

The based in Leer professional academy in East Friesland is - as evidenced by its name - a professional academy, which is supported by associations, companies and corporations in the area throughout the East Frisian peninsula.

In the tourism sector of Oldenburg Ammerland advertises now under the umbrella brand " Ostfriesland " - together with the Oldenburgische Friesland ( Friesland district, Wilhelmshaven ) and East Friesland. Similar collaborations exist for example in the public transport. The so-called growth region Ems - axis (East Frisia, counties Emsland and Bentheim ), which serves the economic cooperation of local authorities along the Ems, is an expression of cooperation in East Frisia with the surrounding counties. Not Ostfriesland (and Emsland), in turn - In the field of spatial planning and economic gearing through circular cross-border cooperation of the district of Friesland and the city of Wilhelmshaven, however, include the Metropolitan Region Bremen / Oldenburg. An overlap between the " Ems - Axis" and the metropolitan area (as well as East Frisia and oldenburger areas) offers next to the growth region of the Jade-Weser, composed of the city of Wilhelmshaven and the districts Witt mouth, Friesland and the Weser march.

Compounds are not only between East Frisia and other inhabited by Frisians areas of Germany, but also to Friesen beyond the German -Dutch border, in the context of the Europe Region " Ems -Dollard region," the German side Ostfriesland, Emsland and the district of Cloppenburg, on the Dutch side the provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe belong.
