Geography

Geographical location

Eichstetten is a südbadisches wine village. It is situated in the Upper Rhine Lowland, on the eastern edge of the Imperial chair. It is the warmest part of Germany, nestled in a valley that stretches from the wooded down glans through sunny vineyards up and vegetable fields to the lowlands. At the foot of the imperial chair of the site is crossed by the Old Dreisamstadion.

Eichstetten is about 3.5 kilometers in a straight line from the Federal Highway 5 (Karlsruhe - Basel) away. It is also a good S-Bahn connection to the Kaiserstuhlbahn available, which stops at the place on weekdays every half hour. With it can be reached in just over 15 minutes, the city center of Freiburg.

History

Even from the Stone Age, there is evidence that people lived on Eichstetter district. Also remains of a villa rustica from the Roman period (3rd century) and finds an Alemannic cemetery ( 600 ) testify that here a very long time people settled.

Eichstetten is first mentioned in 737 in connection with the monastery Murbach documented. The place was founded by the Alemanni, after which the suffix "- stetten " indicates. In the 12th century, the lords of Eichstetten are detected in the place.

In 1416 Eichstetten came to the Margraviate of Baden, which in the 16th century had the effect that the place during the Reformation in 1556 was Protestant. As a result of the Thirty Years' War, the population fell sharply, so that about 1659, only 110 people lived here. By 1850 the population had grown to 2,860 people, but strongly decreased in the following years by emigration to America.

In the 18th century was caused by immigration a significant Jewish community. In 1828 a synagogue was built, which was burned during Kristallnacht in 1938 by foreign members of the SA and the SS and then demolished. The remaining Jews were deported in 1940 to the internment camp de Gur.

The addition of the emperor chair in the church name became effective on 1 October 1997.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms is a divided plate. Front is shown with a red oblique bars on a golden ground, the sovereign arms of Baden. The rear part shows a green upright oak branch with an acorn and four leaves on silver base. Commitment to the promotion and sustainability

Eichstetten pursues intensive promotion of civic engagement and a local Agenda 21 process since the 1990s.
