Au (Schwarzwald)

Au is a town a few miles south of Freiburg im Breisgau in southwestern Baden- Wuerttemberg. The place belongs to the administrative community Hexental based in the neighboring Merzhausen.

Geographical location

Au lies in the northern Hexental between the Schoenberg in the west and the Black Forest to the east.

Community structure

The municipality includes the village of Au Au, the tines Schoenberg, yard and homes Hägenhof and the courtyards courtyards, Finsterbach, Hasgelhöfe, Heimbachhof, Kaischenhof, Kopfackerhof and Swabia courtyards. Within the area are the disposed villages Witraha and Outbound castle Obhusen. The naming of the place Niderhusun in 861 probably refers to low- Hausen in the community Rheinhausen in Emmendingen.

Neighboring municipalities are Horben the southeast, Wittnau (Breisgau ) in the southwest, Ebringen in the west and in the north Merzhausen (all district Breisgau Black Forest) and the city of Freiburg im Breisgau in the east.

Geology

By Au the main fault of the Upper Rhine Graben runs. The page for Schoenberg is dominated by the remains of large landslides.

History

It is first mentioned in documents of the Au monastery of St. Gall in 861 In the Middle Ages there was very likely a castle, of which no remains are however available. The place name " castle courtyards " makes this assumption very likely. In the Thirty Years' War, Au was August 5, 1644 venue of the second day of the Battle of Freiburg.

Economy

Since almost half of the municipal area is agriculturally used land, this industry still plays a significant role. This also includes viticulture, which is already mentioned in 868 in a document in connection with Au. Wine has, among others, from the vineyard Wissler with its location Auer Altberg, which was first mentioned in 1789.

In addition to the property as a farming community, Au but also increasingly into a residential community of workers who commute to nearby Freiburg or in the environment.

Traffic

Individual rides the line 12 of Freiburg traffic AG between the Vauban district, and Merzhausen are mainly in off-peak range, extended to the southern edge of Au.

Sons and daughters

Probably Hartmann von Aue named (* about 1160, † after 1220 ) to Au. Whether he actually comes from a certificate ends here Ministerialengeschlecht, but is not proven - possible places of origin are also Obernau, today part of Rottenburg, and Au at Ravensburg ( monastery Weißenau ). Hartmann was one of the great epic poet of the Hohenstaufen period.
