Emmanuel III. Delly
His Beatitude Emmanuel III. Cardinal Delly ( born October 6, 1927 in Telkaif in Mosul, Iraq) is Emeritus Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldean Catholic Church.
Life
Karim Delly Geries Mourad was dedicated to studies in Mosul and Rome on 21 December 1952 priests. He is a licentiate in philosophy and doctor of theology and canon law. In 1960 he returned to Iraq and was appointed General Secretary of the Patriarch Paul II Cheikho. Charged on the patriarchal vicar, he received episcopal ordination in December 1962 and participated in the Second Vatican Council. Having reached the age limit of 75 years he presented on October 19, 2002 his office. Whereas the appointment of a successor for the late Patriarch Raphael I Bidawid first in Baghdad disunited and ineffective Synod of the Chaldean Catholic Church was finally able to agree on 3 December 2003 in Rome on the person of the aged Delly.
The Patriarchate of Babylon is now about 600,000 believers among 23 bishops. Of the approximately 200 priests act about half in Iraq, 20 serve the approximately 160,000 Catholic Chaldeans in the United States. Approximately 18,000 live in France. Because of the uncertain situation in Iraq leave many Chaldean Catholic Christians the country. Thousands flee to neighboring Syria, to emigrate from there to safe third countries. Currently hold in the capital, Damascus, around 25,000 Chaldean Catholic Christians, while there is usually only 14,000 people in Syria who profess this religion. It is estimated that have left the country since the war began in March 2003, half of Iraqi Christians. Meanwhile, the security situation has V.A. in the Kurdish- controlled northern Iraq, but partially improved again in the Iraqi capital Baghdad. The Chaldean Seminary of St. Peter and the Babel College were able to resume operations - the latter, however, only in safe Ankawa in Arbil.
24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal bishop to the College of Cardinals. The age limit for participation in a conclave had Emmanuel III. to Kardinalskreierung already been exceeded. On December 19, 2012 Benedict XVI accepted. the Emmanuel III. Delly for reasons of age put forward resignation to. For the successor Dellys had Pope Benedict XVI. a Synod of Bishops of the Chaldean Church, headed by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri convened. In the meantime, the Chaldean Archbishop Curia Jacques Ishaq had been appointed as administrator of the Chaldean Church. Successor as patriarch was born on February 1, 2013 Louis Raphael I. Sako.
