History

The beginnings of the Gotthard Railway

Construction in the area Klus for Erstfeld station was in 1879. Initially, the station for the operation to change the Gotthard mountain railway in silenes had been planned, but was moved to Erstfeld .. in 1880 it was decided to approval of the Bundesrat building a shed. 1881 the building was completed in 1882 and went to the train station together with the Gotthard Railway in operation. 1883 carriage house was converted into a side workshop of the GB after the site Bellinzona was chosen as the main workshop. To assign these ten places had advertised. 1887 was followed by a people Wagenremise created. 1893 was followed by the extension of the reception building to a waiting room, also a Perron Hall was built with the platform. Between 1893 and 1895 the distance between Altdorf and silenes was expanded to double track, before 1913 passed the GB to the SBB.

After the takeover by the SBB

1920, the first section of the Gotthard railway between Erstfeld and Ambri -Piotta was electrified, but until 1921 was driven with 7500 volts alternating current to avoid flashovers on insulators. 1922 was finally the railway line Luzern- Immensee and the Gotthard Railway electrified, so that the entire route from Lucerne to Chiasso was under the contact wire. In the same year was built in preparation for the new electric locomotives, the still existing detached draw hall at the old steam locomotive shed. The last steam engine, the C 5/6 in 2969, left the station Erstfeld only on 25 November 1968 after she was still as Schublok Rotary snow blower in action.

1970-2000

In 1973, the new 5 million francs expensive, Integra Signum signal box was installed. It dissolves immediately before the Erstfeld station from the signal box at Arth -Goldau station to then to take over the entire Gotthard north ramp. On March 22, 1987, the roof floor of the draw hall caught fire. The fire was caused by an electric arc, which was caused by the short circuit on the roof of a locomotive. The entire attic was bound to be renewed. Only two and a half years later, on the night of 27 to 28 February 1990, the roof beams burned again, as after a hurricane a brick clamp was flown to the contact line and the arc caused thereby put the hall roof is on fire .. Just one year later it was rebuilt. In 1992, the current interim Perron with the connected tracks 2 and 4 was created. Track 3 was dismantled for the platform. Once until the beginning of the 1990s the main task of the depot Erstfeld was to supply locomotives for the additional shift or biasing service, accounted for by today's trains and the maneuvering in Erstfeld, which led to a loss of jobs. With the Divisionierung the SBB in the three units infrastructure, passenger and cargo depot Erstfeld went to the Division Cargo. In 2002 it was described by SBB Historic as outstation of the Museum of Transport in Lucerne. This function would then take over after the opening of the base tunnel in 2016.

Future

SBB Cargo

In a statement published in 2004 the depot Erstfeld of SBB Cargo favor of a newly constructed depot Goldau was lifted. The reason for moving the goal was to train drivers that consistently drive from Offenburg ago .. Unlike Erstfeld the station Arth- Goldau is within the legally prescribed limit. While in Erstfeld all disappeared SBB bodies and the depot was converted into a museum, new jobs were created in Goldau up to 250

NEAT

By NEAT, which will branch in Rynächt between Altdorf and Erstfeld of the Gotthard railway Altstrecke, the Erstfeld station will continue to lose importance. Then the train station is provided only as end point of the light rail train and a stop for the steep track moving trains. There is the idea that the Matterhorn -Gotthard -Bahn their route Andermatt- Göschenen to Erstfeld and Altdorf extended in order to get there following the NEAT. However, for this would be either Umspurungen or a three-rail, when the mountain line to serve as a bypass for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, is necessary.
