The Bellinzona railway station is a railway station in the Swiss town of Bellinzona and the largest railway junction of Canton Ticino.

History

The station was built in 1874 following the opening of the Ticino valley railways with the routes Biasca - opens Locarno - Bellinzona - Lugano - Chiasso and Bellinzona. 1882 arrived with the opening of the Gotthard tunnel and the associated operating recording on the track Airolo - Biasca the connection to the north and in the German-speaking Switzerland.

Since the commissioning of the TILO, the S- train network in the Ticino and Lombardy, in 2004 Bellinzona is the operation center. From Bellinzona, S-Bahn trains to Biasca, Chiasso, Locarno or Albate - Camerlata, at peak times to Luino.

2008 became the SBB Cargo site in the headlines when the workers went on strike after the SBB had prescribed rigorous reduction measures for the site.

With the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel 2017, the travel time between Bellinzona and German-speaking Switzerland will fall by around one hour.

Accidents

On April 23, 1924 collided in Bellinzona two express trains of the SBB. In the accident, 14 people lost their lives, including former German Vice Chancellor Karl Helfferich.

Plant

In addition to the reception building has the station on three central platforms, one includes a truncated stump track and thus serves at the height of the reception building as a side platform. Despite the planned ring-road Bellinzona, but this was postponed due to lack of funds, to the station remain after the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, Highway Maintenance. During the construction of the Ceneri base tunnel was first planned, the present-day train stations Bellinzona and Lugano with a new, Ticino Sud mentioned to replace at the intersection of NEAT and the Altstrecke located in Camorino remote station. TILO

Due to capacity constraints in the Bellinzona railway station, the S20 and the S10- Train route will Bellinzona - Albate - Camerlata northward extended by a station to Castione - Arbedo, since there is enough space to turn available.
