Greatest successes of the club are winning the Balkans Cup in 1979 and a second place in the Romanian League in 1986. Twice (1939 and 1943 ) failed the club in the Romanian Cup final. Internationally, the club was a little success to date, the best result was reaching the third round of the UEFA Cup in 1987.

After a two-month interlude of Gabriel Popescu took Vasile Siman, president and patron of the club, mid-March 2011 Gheorghe Mulţescu as head coach back, but even this change could not prevent the immediate re sporting relegation to the second division. That Sportul Studenţesc played despite his last table space in the following season 2011/12 in Liga 1, the club had to thank the subsequent license revocation by Gloria Bistrita vs FC Timişoara.

After head coach Mulţescu had to be treated from the beginning of October 2011 due to kidney problems, took over assistant coach Daniel Timofte and goalkeeping coach Catalin Mulţescu the training of the team. After the draw at home against FCM Targu Mures Gheorghe Mulţescu dissolved on 15 October 2011, his contract.
