History

On the occasion of the declaration of independence from Portugal took Brazil on September 18, 1822 green flag with a yellow rhombus, whose corners touch the edge of the flag. The colors of the flag go back to the Brazilian Emperor Pedro I., the green, the color of his house ( Bragança ), on the occasion of his marriage with Maria Leopoldine of Austria joined with the yellow of the Habsburgs. In the middle of the flag a crowned green shield that was surrounded by green coffee and tobacco branches appeared. The sign was a white disk with the crimson cross of the Order of Christ in the middle. December 1822 the imperial coat of arms was placed in the center of the flag.

1889, the last Brazilian Emperor ( Pedro II ) was overthrown. The republic replaced the imperial coat of arms on the flag with a blue celestial sphere with the stars of the southern sky, crossed by a white band, which bears the inscription Ordem e progresso. The stars on the flag represent the sky over Rio de Janeiro is on November 15, 1889, the place and the date on which the Republic was proclaimed.
